on 23 October 1955 the Saarlanders decide by referendum on the ‘Saarstatut’, a sort of constitution for Saarland. Under the Saarstatut the territory would obtain a far-reaching degree of independence. Almost 68 percent of the voters reject the Saarstatut. Renewed negotiations between France and Germany result in Saarland's entry into the German Federal Republic as tenth ‘Bundesland’ on 01-01-1957
